I installed and activated Better Messages on a live site after testing on a staging site. I didn’t have any problems with the testing. Shortly after activating on the live site, several members of my site reported having problems with reading messages. This is a copy of their reports to me:
“When I go to messages. click on a new message from a member, the message opens, and after a few seconds it goes blank & a message comes up, unauthorised to read this message . Check authorization! “Did a check on a previous message I received and have read , it opened freely no problems.”
“Same thing! Message opened, than within 2 seconds, up came The member I received the message from, I can see their profile & see they are from the USA, so not blocked”. “Now after I sent you my first message about this issue, I have since opened & read the problem message, Seems doing other things in Better Messages, it some how accepted me to go back & open the problem message !”
Authorization required. Continue with account, now. Under that is login,. I did that , returned to messages , clicked on your message and it again opened , but this time stayed open”.
“It’s doing it to me again. I have to get Authorization to read new mail, and it now stopping me from reading pervious mail! Some one is messing with this site big time. Not impressed”
Any thoughts on this authorization message? Better Messages are only available to logged in members.

    Hi there!

Caching can the issue. Are you using caching plugins, especially check if you have caching disabled for logged in users?

Thank you for your reply. We exclude the following from caching: /members/, /register/, /activate/, /activity/,/messages/, /notifications/, /settings/, /friends/, /groups/, /profile/, /login/, /wp-login.php, /members/$, /view-members/ obviously, 1 url per line without the comma, so shouldn’t be a caching issue. I did witness it one time, it flashed up the authorisation message quickly and then disappeared. It didn’t affect me, I could view the messages, but several users reported that they couldn’t do anything until authorised, but there isn’t any authorisation. All of my members are assigned member status. We have over 4,300 members
